Found objects coexist with more traditional materials to produce psychological environments where the fantastic and everyday vie for center stage.

Utilizing the artificial horizon of the exhibition space where wall meets floor, I reconstruct site-specific landscapes made up of figurative sculpture, video projections, sound, fluorescent lights, carpeting, and other synthetic materials.

Sculptural objects function as props that can be continually rearranged to suggest multiple narratives and distinct installations.

Enamels such as powder coats, chrome and auto paint mask traditional materials such as steel and bronze to create works that confound a simple understanding of materials. A bronze figure looks crafted out of porcelain or a branch may appear to be the original, contradicting expectations of mass and volume.

Minnesota Festival Support

This activity is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature from the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Minnesota Festival Support is a pilot program designed to engage Minnesotans in festivals that celebrate the arts, build community, and expose communities to diverse art forms including folk and traditional arts.

The program provides funding for sponsoring or presenting organizations to feature Minnesota individual artists and Minnesota arts groups in arts festivals, or in the arts components of broader, community-based festivals.

Nathan has performed from New York to Slovenia, Milano to Mankato, and Rome, Georgia to Rome, Italy.

Brian Roessler is a bassist, composer, and long-time student of double bass virtuoso François Rabbath. His composition Returning to Silence was chosen as the subject of a master class with Henry Threadgill at the MacPhail Center for Music. Brian has recorded and performed with artists such as Tony Hymas, Didier Petit, Carei Thomas, Dan Navarro, Peter Mayer, Speaking in Tongues, Storyhill, and Spymob. Brian is currently a member of Fantastic Merlins and a collaborator in Community Pool with Nathan Hanson.

Drummer Peter Hennig was recently named among the City Pages Jazz Artists of the Year.
Lara Hanson is an interdisciplinary artist. Her work combines the disciplines of drawing, animation, movement and voice to create performance pieces. The performances explore the mantra Life = Movement/Movement = Life. Movement, as the term applies to her work, refers not only to physical movement but includes intellectual movement (the workings of the mind and imagination) and spiritual movement (the stirring of the soul).

Since 1978, Todd Harper has been a performer/composer in the Twin Cities area. Harper studied with Carei Thomas, Bill Banfield, and Alan Bryan. He forms many jazz groups with strange names. To confuse us further, Todd writes for rural community theatre, percussion ensemble, jazz orchestra, jazz opera, and things. He has long ears and a pointy snout.

Panelectric Living Cinema is a living, modern cinema that strives to be self-contained, mobile, intimate and interactive with the performance environment. Its main concerns are that of media and technology declared obsolete or 'dead,' that contain within not only a sense of historical context but also inherent meaning and praxis that is not wholly, if ever, irrelevant. This extends to our choice of content and narrative, drawing from fairy tale, myth and legend, seminal to the earliest cinema and continuing to inform the modern film.

Panelectric was founded in 1998 by Amelie Collins in an effort to navigate between the contrasting languages of magic lantern films and digital cinema, creating a dialogue that speaks to changing technology as informing content, the shift of ‘presenting’ context for film from an intimate one to mass audience and back again, and the future of anonymous narrative, as in myth, fairy tale and virtual medium. Panelectric currently had sound/audio support by John Vance, a composer who leans toward open structures that facilitate improvisation and interactive performance, incorporating unconventional strategies and instrumentation. John has worked as a performer/curator at the Walker Art Center, American Composers Forum, FuturePerfect series, Red Eye Theater, Intermedia Arts, No Name Exhibitions @ The Soap Factory, Heliotrope Festival and several International sound events.

Using two state of the art 15 thousand lumen projectors and a bit of stage lighting magic I plan to transform the north face architecture of the Landmark Center north tower into a playful interaction of water, color and light.

By graphically mapping the north face architecture of the Landmark Center north tower I will be able to break it into separate elements or “layers.” This allows me the opportunity to project multiple layers of video content onto different sections of the building façade at the same time. Then through the careful use of color a 3d illusion can be brought to life.

The video content will be combination of motion and still graphics, motion imagery and color. The content will then be played back from a media server and mixed live to the projectors by using a theatrical lighting console.

I will be supporting the projection by adding multiple color led lighting to the base of the building for another angle by which to “draw” out the different shapes of the building façade.

Michael Murnane

A 29-year veteran of theatrical lighting design, Michael Murnane has lit more than 1000 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, China, Tanzania, Kenya, as well as several countries in Europe. Throughout the wide range of theatrical genre in which Murnane works; theater, opera, concerts, galas, architecture, television, and corporate events, his designs win consistent praise for their power to bring the emotional tone of the work to life.

Andrew Saboe

From his Saint Paul lair, Andrew Saboe provides 2D and 3D design, illustration, and drafting services to pretty much anyone in the entertainment industry what will pay him to do it. This has helped him to dodge honest work for a good many years.

1. scattering, dispersion
2. the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland

A mobile film installation projected on homes that are in the process of foreclosure or are foreclosed. 'Diaspora' is a project designed to provide a visual voice for those individuals and families within our community who have recently lost or are in the midst of loosing their home, to tell their story. Embracing the silent issues within and behind foreclosure, this project aims to give those issues surrounding foreclosure leverage by providing a mobile projection platform that will publicly highlight how prevalent foreclosure is and how many people are directly facing the reality of foreclosure within our community.

We need volunteers to:

Help run film installation equipment installed on MAW's mobile bike platforms (equipment includes projectors, iPod Touch devices, speakers, and bikes)

Help guard and keep equipment safe

Glowing plankton inhabit a membrane of soft vessels filled with seawater. Together they form a liquid veil suspended within the arch. Conceived as an ambient site that is responsive to the presence of people who visit, the water in the soft vessels is animated by delicate vibrations as people enter and experience the chamber. There is a sense that the glowing light is responsive to people’s movement within the space and at the same time this

assist with the transformation of the arch into a dark chamber with the addition of bamboo and tyvek panels

participate in the process of greeting people at the arch during the festival and ushering them in and out of the darkness of the chamber that we create for viewing the subtle light of bioluminescence

In the discipline of architecture, the V shape between two arches is called a “spandrel”; negative space, but part of the design nonetheless. A site-specific sonic event somewhere between performance and installation, the Sound Spandrel foregrounds the marginal and the parenthetical to integrate music as part of a location's incidental soundscape. Exploring the intersection of sound, space, and human behavior, the performance responds to the acoustic character of an environment and becomes raw material for the creation of new audio structures within the space. Anything from the tonalities of heating and cooling systems to the buzz of light bulbs to the percussive patterns of footsteps and door slams inspire a score fleshed out by live performers and electronically blended back into the soundscape.

Commissioned performers include Charles Gillett, John Kannenberg, Bethany Lacktorin, Joe Nagel, and Davu Seru. Instrumentation features guitar, saxophone, zither, cymbal, bells, mbira, and digitally manipulated recordings of the actual space. Plans are afoot for mobile “choirs” of bells and harmonicas. The effect often will not be of something “happening”, but of an immersive sonic environment to be engaged at will. The audience's experience will differ based on vantage point, thus encouraging movement through the space to engage actively. Each spectator at a performance is usually relegated to a certain experience based on their location in the auditorium; here, an infinite variety of experiences can be had as the audience chooses its trajectory.

Mike Hallenbeck is a composer and sound designer active in film, theater, dance, installation, and performance. He adopts sounds found both hither and yon, brings them home to play with each other, and helps them decide what to be when they grow up.

Windharps (made from fishing line and cat-food can resonators over long tubes) are set up at the breezy edges of scenic overlooks. A gentle sustained breeze activates a complex harmonic series, creating sustainable-powered melody; a rich result from simple technology.

Visitors will notice the wind more, hear what they feel, appreciate acoustic phenomena and pure tuning, and see an example of ingenious technology harnessing natural forces. It will even make the traffic noise sound better.

Aeolian tones have fueled listener’s imaginations since ancient times. A steady gentle breeze forms a laminar wind pressure that builds up vibrations in a string (or power line) different from the resonating modes resulting from a finger-plucked string. The strings respond by fanning up and down the harmonic series, creating gapped melodies and chords from the noisy source in a kind of reverse entropy, an alchemical sublimation of pure tone from chaotic energy. Blackburn’s wind-harps u se high tension fishing line coupled with an amplifier made from cat food cans. With strings in the four directions, the tones react to the prevailing winds by producing different clouds of sound.

The wind-flutes operate on the beer-bottle effect where a jet of wind passes over a fipple and sets up standing waves inside the cavity. Blackburn has designed a wider mouthpiece that is more efficient at catching the wall of wind as it passes over. Unlike the wind-harps, the wind-flutes respond to higher, shorter bursts of wind. With a stack of them of different sizes and set at different directions the space comes alive with anything from burbling to an asthmatic church organ.

A 2005 study by the British Dairy Board investigated the relationship between the ingestion of cheese before bed and the sleep patterns of the study’s participants. The research unexpectedly discovered that various cheeses produced uniformly similar dreamscapes in a diverse group of participants. For example, Cheddar, America’s most popular cheese, consistently produced dreams involving celebrities. These findings have been used to create a menu of dreams, allowing visitors to the Black Dog Cafe to order the type of dream they’d like to have when their night is done. By ingesting a dream catalyst in the form of a small sample from a selected variety of cheese, participants are able to extend the Northern Spark festival into the personal and mysterious realm of the subconscious.

Visitors to the Black Dog Cafe will find a take out menu of dreams, with specific types of dreams activated by the ingestion of a specific types of cheese. The samples will be complimentary, and will be accompanied by a description of the type of dream the cheese produces. With instructions to ingest twenty minutes before bedtime, visitors will be asked to consider the relationships between input and output, cause and effect, the mysteries of biological processes and the technology of the body. By creating a direct connection between the external world and the private world of dreams, visitors are given agency in relation to their dreaming life and the manifestations of the subconscious.

It is largely a fabled geographical and cultural account of pre-Qin China as well as a collection of mythology.” It is also an important precedent of narrative by image. During the dinosaur extinction and and the rise of human civilization, an era in which old and new phase caused such a graphic narrative.

Shan Hai Jing, explores the power of magic and myth, and promoted the development of human civilization. It represents the ancient Chinese belief of the mountains and nature, which also records the symbols of the ancient myths, opened the human imagination and creativity.

The Yellow River originates from the ancient gods’ image. The Mississippi runs through two cities of industrial civilization. Animation and visual image narrative in Classic of the Mountains and Seas will re-constitute a collision of East and West.
Mobile Hotspot is an exploration of alternative energy, sustainability, and human powered solutions to rising fuel costs.
As a response to the rising fuels costs and consumption of energy in U.S. society, this project explores the potential of alternative energy production for everyday use by developing a mobile energy production platform from scrap car parts and exercise equipment, all in a compact mobile broadcast unit. These explorations are founded on the concept of freedom, from reliance on unsustainable consumption of energy firstly, but more broadly by the social freedoms demanded in the recent uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and even Wisconsin. The Mobile Hotspot will be tracking thoughts on freedom across the world by projecting live feeds of tweets containing #freedom and #energy paired with imagery related to power use, development, and innovation.

wanderlust will be a one night event consisting of 15 performers traveling throughout the city, carrying with them symbols of travel and search. Over the course of one evening, the members of wanderlust will throughout 4 locations involved in the Northern Spark Nuit Blanche (central bridge underpass, Father Hennepin Bluffs Park, Stone Arch Bridge, and the Mill City silos) via diverse modes of travel such as cycling, walking, skateboarding, and carpooling. Along this journey, the members of wanderlust will carry various types of luggage that serve as mobile shadow theatres.

Suitcases, backpacks, purses, and bicycle trailers will all be hollowed out and modified to house mini projectors which will project scenes

of search and travel. Some of the shadow theatres will also house more low-tech shadow projections using a simple light source and cutouts with simple motors that allow for small movement. Members of wanderlust will each carry and operate one of the shadow theatres from site to site. They will travel as a group unit and will wear reflective gear so that upon arrival they are easy to recognize. At each site, the wanderers will simply stop and observe the other performances/installations involved in the festival. Festivalgoers will be able to observe the wanderers observing the rest of the festival on their journey. Festivalgoers will witness the travel and search of the wanders as they seek to end their wanderlust.

for dawn or dusk // homeward

for dawn or dusk // homeward is a 10-15 minute sound work for 100+ local musicians playing brass, percussion, woodwinds and tiny whistles. The site specific performance will take place on the Stone Arch Bridge, stretching across the Mississippi, playing overlapping melodies derived from the route of the river. The concerto tracks the route of the river South–past St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Community involvement is integral in this piece. It explores how we can create a forum of equal participation and creative input, much like brass bands in Europe and reminiscent of community bands that used to populate the United States. In this spirit, local amateurs will work side by side with professions, as well as community leaders who will run rehearsals. If this sounds like fun to you and would like to be involved, please contact Northern Spark here.

Call for Participation

We are looking for musicians age 10+ (amateur and professional) who love playing their instrument, are not afraid to play loud, and have an interest in engaging with their community via music. Folks need to be willing to participate in three rehearsals prior to the performance at the Northern Spark Festival on June 4 at 9:05. Participants will need to provide their own instruments, and percussionists are encouraged to bring two instruments from this list: marching snare drum, marching bass drum, glockenspiel, metal junk, and bells. More information. And here.

Placed on the model will be a hundreds of small one-inch-scale buildings, as well as swaths of miniature plant materials (grasses, shrubs, trees).

Beginning at 3 a.m. and ending at dawn–right around 5:30 a.m.–poets, songsters, writers and comedians will read or recite in small groups scattered across the Open Field at Walker Art Center.
Each bedtime story will last just ten minutes. (Wouldn’t want to put anyone to sleep, you know. Too much to do!)
Join in making collaborative drawings under the twinkling lights of the Open Field Grove. Think glowsticks and blacklights for this nocturnal round of social art making.

The spirit of Drawing Club is built on sharing, collaboration and social experience of art making. Here is how it works. Drawing club meets every week under the new grove of trees on the Open Lounge. Members of the public are invited to join with local artists, grab a pencil and share their contributions. Paper and art supplies are provided. The center of each table will contain the working pool of pieces (including works in progress from prior weeks). You can start a new drawing, slide it back into pool, pass it around, alter, edit, and amend it until the group declares each piece complete. The finished works will be collected and displayed on the Open Field Flickr page and held for a end of summer exposition. There are no assignments, structured projects or formal processes for drawing club. This idea is to make collaborative works…however that manifests itself and what can beat making art under a grove of trees with a cold drink!

Goshka Macuga

In recent years, Goshka Macuga has become internationally known for using institutional histories as staging grounds for complex proposals. For her first solo museum exhibition in the United States, the London-based Polish artist seizes upon the Walker’s financial underpinnings in the lumber business of its founder, T. B. Walker, and considers the forest as a metaphor for American freedom. She links the history of contemporary art and its museums with the economic and nationalist mythologies of the American landscape, drawing upon a suite of lumber industry publicity photographs that a Walker-family company commissioned from Berenice Abbott in the 1940s. Among a digressive range of topics, Macuga finds speculative relationships between Abbott’s heroic capitalist picturesque and current Tea Party rhetoric, represented in photographs she took at a rally at the Minnesota state capitol. Within an exhibition architecture of her design, Macuga sets elements from the Walker collections and archives—including works by Carl Andre, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Duchamp, and Sherrie Levine—against a monumental new tapestry depicting a famous pine forest in northern Minnesota that accidentally survived the original logging of the state. → See what else is happening at Nightshift.

The Headphone Concert for Nightshift places this unique concert model inside the confines of the James Turrell Sky Pesher on the Walker Greenspace. Local musicians will perform live compositions through a series of headphone jacks and amps. The audience will be invited to sit around the performers on the Skyspace benches, plug-in their headphones and enjoy the show under the night sky.

The Mobile Creative Outpost is a nomadic social gathering point that redefines spaces into areas of a creative, self-determined activity. Inspired by the free open-ended play of adventure playgrounds or junk playgrounds, which are more common in much of Europe but are a rarity in the United States, the Creative Outpost doesn’t propose a specific program. Instead, it offers a variety of loose parts, old building materials, tools and open-ended equipment that challenges participants to come up with their own objects, inventions and activities.

Come create a sculpture, build a shelter, stage a performance, invent a game, start a dance party, play music, or simply hang out around the mobile fire pit and burn stuff. For Northern Spark, The Mobile Creative Outpost will take advantage of the multiple nodes of the festival by utilizing the mobility of the trailer. The trailer will move around to four different locations throughout the night and allow the people and the given situation to guide and inform the activity of the Outpost.

9-11pm – Science Museum in St. Paul
11:30-3am – East side of the stone arch bridge in between the Hennepin Island Park and the power plant near the cul-de-sac
3:00-6:00 – West side of the stone arch Bridge by the intersection of Portland Ave and West River Parkway to watch the sunrise

Utilizing the artificial horizon of the exhibition space where wall meets floor, I reconstruct site-specific landscapes consisting of sculpture, digital photography, sound, fluorescent lights, carpeting, and other synthetic materials. Manufactured objects function as proxies for nature, creating psychic environments that acknowledge the history of landscape painting while simultaneously revealing its practical, internal structure.

Sculptural objects function as props that can be continually rearranged to suggest multiple narratives and distinct installations. Each sculpture is completed by the architecture of the gallery and the visitor, who invests the open space with imagined elements such as land, sky, and water.

Powder coats, sprayed chrome and auto paint enamels mask traditional materials such as steel and bronze to create works that confound a simple understanding of material. A bronze figure looks crafted from porcelain or a branch may appear to be the original, contradicting expectations of mass and volume. Conversely, a sculpture such as Dowel Mountain takes on the qualities of a drawing by utilizing 1/8” wood dowels that produce a line too thin to be viewed as mass, and a structure that appears to vanish and reappear as one circles it.

Please Remain Seated is a set of performances tailored for 15 festival buses and their drivers, along the routes and for the duration of Northern Spark: a Nuit Blanche. Giving riders a glimpse into the inner life of driving and being driven as they navigate the city, Please Remain Seated explores the forgotten spaces of a system of public transit and the dynamics within a system of public service.

Constructed from interviews with city bus drivers and commuters, each performance will be created for the particular characteristics of the bus, utilizing the talents of the drivers as well as the equipment on the bus itself. Please Remain Seated will be performed along the routes of the Northern Spark bus routes. Each bus’s performance will vary in context, style, length and theme, allowing riders to experience a range of expression from short poetic works to longer sound monologues enlivening and animating the night.

Created by the three Skewed Visions principles, Please Remain Seated will range from short enigmatic pronouncements to longer monologues, from choreographed equipment to passenger dance lines, from hummed tunes to full orchestrations, from the haiku of paying the fare to the historical epic of the cross-town journey. These performances provide rider-audiences with insight into the world of bus drivers, the routes of the buses, and an opportunity to experience the mystery, intimacy and the terror of missing your stop from the other side of the steering wheel.

These interests are explored in her current works Self Portrait…for now made for the Cyprus demilitarized zone and Terror Town about the US terror training industry. Kayim was a 2006 Walker Arts Center resident artist and is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Theater Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota.

Join staff and volunteers from the American Swedish Institute and create your own wire project at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design! Wire craft is a type of slöjd, or handcraft, that is experiencing a renaissance in Sweden today. Participants can make a small wire hook, adding their own artistic embellishments from 6-12 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

This activity is in collaboration with the MCAD’s exhibit Material Matters, featuring 29 current MCAD students and alumni who mine the expressive potential of fiber media. As fibers, textiles, and the language of textile patterning have achieved wide currency in contemporary art practice, so too have MCAD students and alumni embraced these possibilities.

The American Swedish Institute, housed in the Turnblad Mansion, is a place to learn about and experience Swedish, Swedish-American, and Nordic culture, learn about the role of Swedish and other immigrants in Minnesota’s history, and share stories and experiences. As ASI undergoes a period of construction and renovation, look for us out in the community at events like this! www.americanswedishinst.org

Diaspora

scattering, dispersion

the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland

Diaspora is a film installation projected on a home that has gone through the process of foreclosure, and after sitting vacant for four years will now be demolished. Designed to provide a visual voice for our community confronting the consequences of foreclosure, Diaspora highlights the temporary physical existence of the house – once a home – and the looming disappearance of this structure and its history altogether located at 2726 Stevens Ave South, Minneapolis, MN. Once the sun sets June 4th, viewers will be able to drive by or stroll along the sidewalk of address 2726 Stevens Ave South, and witness the house glowing with imagery of other homes that have since been demolished in surrounding areas of Minneapolis as well as throughout our nation. This projection will be visible throughout the night until the sun rises to our new day, June 5th. How does displacement affect our community? Does our city and do we ourselves acknowledge the struggle of our neighbors? Does our community grow stronger by erasing condemned properties and leaving a vacant lot for a new future? What history is disappearing and to where are our displaced communities moving? How responsible are we for our community?

Diaspora aims to initiate a discussion within our community about the above questions and acknowledge how our community is changing and why. This project intends to give the silent issues surrounding foreclosure leverage by providing a projection platform that will publicly highlight how prevalent foreclosure is and how many people are directly facing the reality of foreclosure within our community.
